10.23.11 “Our Lucky Day”

"Our Lucky Day"My aunt, the youngest of the family, had been caring for grandpa for the last couple of years.

When she was a little girl, grandpa got up early one day to head to the horse track. Grandma didn’t want him blowing all his money that day, so she convinced my aunt to go with daddy and keep an eye on him! At first she did not want to spend her whole day at a horse track, but Grandpa said that if they won, then he would buy her this new bicycle that she had seen at the store and had wanted so bad.

So they went. Not your typical father/daughter day. Grandpa always had a way with the horses. Somehow he just knew the right ones to bet and the right time. This day, he hit almost every long shot that came in. My aunt never yelled so much in her life for a horse to run faster! When they went to collect the winnings, Grandpa suddenly had a wad of money in his hands. True to his promise, he pulled out a crisp new $100 bill and said, today was our lucky day, now let’s go get you that bike!

To this day, she still has that bike. It may not be as fast, or as flashy, but the memory lives on. And always will.

  1. Someday your dad will fix it up and it will look like new again – after all it is a Schwinn Chicago bike! Doesn’t get much better than that (although the ‘Crate’ bikes were pretty cool).

  2. That is a wonderful story, well told and beautifully illustrated. B&W is just so right in this context.
